Hello readers, and welcome to an awesome and fun collab i’m doing with Plyasm! We were talking about some of the shows airing this season, specifically Shield Hero, and decided to put together a collab to talk about it. And since we’ve both read Shield Hero in some fashion or another, we decided to choose a show we both know nothing about. That ended up being Dororo.
Now, about the way we’ve structured this collab. We created a set of common questions to ask about each episode, an we each give our answers to all the questions for each episode. The interesting thing about our plan, though, is we’re going to be alternating posts… so my next post will be Shield Hero Episode 2, then Dororo Episode 3, etc. So, if you want the whole picture, you’ll have to make sure to check out both our blogs!

What are your general thoughts for this episode?
Seriously, seriously good. Like, holy cow, that was an absolute gem of an opening episode. It’s one of those where, after finishing, I just am craving more. So little exposition, you get thrown right into the world, and it all flowed so well. Almost everything in this episode just… worked. From the incredible OP and ED to the artstyle, the story premise… it all just makes me want more.
WOW. Did not expect the first episode to be so good. Honestly, as much as I love MAPPA, their first episodes sometimes tend to be a little lackluster. This first episode, however, was anything but. The opening and ending songs were great, particularly notable the ending song by amazarashi. The animations ranged from average to amazing, and it’s very coherent as a whole, to be honest. The real banger is the plot. Oh, the THICC, THICC plot. Please, give me more MAPPA!!!!
Did the episode fit your expectations, and in which ways did it differ from it?(If it does)
I wasn’t really sure what I was expecting, going into this first episode… I mean, I love a good samurai drama, and the promise of a revenge plot sounded cool, but also easy to mess up. Thankfully, though, it seems MAPPA has done a great job, as I really enjoyed this episode.
Expectations shattered. I expected a samurai thing with demons from the summary. I got a samurai thing with demons, except with THICC plot and really, really good action. Oh that and some thief punk.
What do you expect to happen from here on out?(and why)
Our nameless protag seems to have gotten some changes… perhaps he will start getting some backstory, and maybe knowledge of why he’s the way he is? I don’t really know yet….
Hmmm, it’s actually kind of hard to say. The easiest would be guessing that Dororo(oh shit the series is named after the not so main character!) and the….guy will travel together now and defeat demons. But, I think next episode will probably focus more on what exactly happened to….the guy. And….maybe he’ll finally be named and I don’t have to call him “the guy” anymore? (Inb4 RoRoDo)
Which scene do you think other people would react to differently?
I really found the scene near the end interesting. I really am intrigued by the demons, perhaps more than I should be. Why did they steal the organs? Who is killing the demons? And what’s the story behind these 12 demons, anyways?
Probably the monk’s death. Instead of being shocked and stuff(which I assume others will react in that way), I was actually thinking of the significance of his death. Why would a monk be associated with the “Hall of Hell”?(I think Studio Pierrot is inside there)
Which character did you like the most this episode? Have they done anything in particular/changed?
Our titular character. I really liked him. I love the energy and the cheerful attitude he brings to the table. His deceptive adorableness hides a very clever and scheming attitude beneath the surface, and I cannot wait to see how he interacts with our silent protagonist.
Ahh…this is hard. I actually quite like thief punk aka Dororo, but I feel attracted to the (so far) mysterious….guy. I want to know more about him. I would go with the guy I guess. Needs more character development!
What’s the high point of the episode for you and why?
The fight on the bridge. Holy shit, I was mesmerised by the action sequence. Everything felt…natural. Even though…everything isn’t natural.
I have to agree with Ply here. That fight on the bridge was incredible. The choreography was fantastic, and the flow of that action sequence was absolutely on point. Absolutely fantastic.
What can be improved in this episode and why? (a.k.a low point)
I’ve never been a huge fan of timeskips… and a timeskip of 16 years is pretty huge. I hope we get to see what happened during those years later on, because I don’t enjoy having gaps in a story, especially when there’s various characters that we should have known during that time.
Hmmm. Probably the transition. Felt a little…forced? The narration helped quite a bit though. And the animation is only average sometimes.
What situation/decision/action is the most relatable to you in this episode and why?
What situation was most relatable to me… possibly the struggle of the monk. Trying to convince someone not to make a mistake you know will ruin their life… well, I’ve had to do that a few times.
This is hard to say…I can’t quite think of what exactly I would be able to relate to, so I’ll cop out and say I can’t think of anything. (Totally not because I’m lazy)
Pick a situation from this episode. If you were put in this situation, how would you have handled it?
I can’t help but think about the situation of the organless child. How would I feel, living in constant pain, struggling every day to live. Would I crack under the pressure, or live on, trying to survive?
Would pick getting confronted by the…dudes. For me, I would probably just say sorry and accept my punishment and be done with it. I mean, it’s wrong to steal so…yea. Just own up to the mistake?
Most beautiful scene?(screenshot)
I’m going to cheat here and say the entire opening. That was amazing. Watch it for yourself and decide:
Again, I have to agree with Ply and say the OP. It was absolutely stellar. The visuals combined with the amazing music made it easily the best part of the episode for me
Overall, I found this episode fantastic. I’m already engrossed in the mystery and atmosphere the show creates with its grimy visual style and lovely sound direction. The OP and the ED are some of the best I’ve heard in a good while, as well. Like, I got so excited to see the show just from the OP alone. Of course, the episode left us with quite a few unanswered questions, but i look forward to seeing how things resolve themselves.
Honestly, i’m really glad we chose this show to watch, and i’m really looking forward to seeing what goes down in the next few episodes. But this is only half the collab! Make sure to go over to Plyasm’s post on Episode 1 of Shield Hero! It’s also great, and makes me really excited for the rest of the season to come! Thank you all for reading, and I’ll see you all in the next post!
