Summer 2018 Potential Watchlist

Okay, okay. I’m behind, AGAIN. So i’m gonna try to get this out of the way as quickly as possible, so I can actually get into watching these shows. Keep in mind that for a lot of these, my knowledge of them goes only as far as an excerpt on a MAL page or some such, so this is a very tentative list. But anyways… here goes nothing.

Overlord Season 3

Anyone who’s read my blog for a decent amount of time knows i’m a fan of Overlord. I just love the series, bot the Anime and the Light Novels, and I have 8 volumes in hardcover to back up my love of the series. Season 2 took on a bit of a lower arc of the story, but with Season 3, things should be improving drastically. I’m just ecstatic to see what this season brings.

I’ve already been spoiled the new OP by Plyasm, and I must say, I freaking love it. Overlord has always had good OPs, in both music and visuals, and there is no change in tune here. It is Madhouse, though, so it’s kind of to be expected.

Satsuriku no Tenshi

I don’t know what this is, or really what it’s about, but the description sounded intriguing, so i’ll give it a fair shot. Some sort of grim reaper, thriller/horror type mystery show, with basically an escape room scenario? Sounds promising to me. I’ve got some trust in J.C. Staff and what they can do, with their work on things like Danmachi, Little Busters, Witch Craft Works, and more, so my hopes are pretty high. Guess we’ll wait and see how this all pays off.

How Not To Summon A Demon Lord

Hooo… I’m gonna have to explain myself on this one. I’ve been following the light novel… tentatively. It’s not my favorite, it’s pretty average actually with lots of fanservice and a pretty generic Isekai setting. There are a few things that make it fun, like the demon lord persona and whatnot, but compared to Overlord, I think it’ll flop. Worth at least checking how the first volume or so translated into the anime, though, I suppose.

Grand Blue

Grand Blue is one of the shows i’ve heard more about this season. I’ve heard lots about how funny it is, and that it involves Scuba Diving. Well, as a comedy buff by nature, and a licensed Scuba Diver myself, I can’t imagine a show better suited to my tastes. Slice-of-Life is right up my alley as well, as many of my favorite shows are SOL, so i’m just all-around excited for Grand Blue.

Hyakuren no Haou to Seiyaku no Valkyria

Another Light Novel, Isekai, Harem show. I’ve read volume one of this, and again… pretty generic. I’m honestly not super exited for it, but i’ll give it a shot anyways, just because i’ve read the light novel. Isekai isn’t a bad genre per se, but it just feels so done-to-death at times, with very few breaking the mold and giving a truly unique experience of the genre. I think this show will probably fall right into the generic vein, though.

Angolmois: Record of Mongol Invasion

Angolmois: Record of Mongol Invasion

I dunno why I decided to check this one out. I guess i’m a sucker for historical-type series, a reason why I like Samurai Warriors and Sengoku Basara so much. Drifters and Kamuy were also pretty nice hits for me, so i’ll be giving this one a go as well. I hope it turns out to be good, because it’s not often we get a really good historical Anime coming around.

And that’s really it for my list. There doesn’t seem to be much this season that particularly catches my eye, but i’ll give a few more shows a look and see how they fare for a few episodes. Who knows; my final watchlist might look totally different from this tentative one just from looking at the season’s summary of shows.

What are you guys watching this season? What’s been good so far, and what’s been bad, and do you have any recommendations for me to check out? Please let me know down in the comments, and look forward to my first impressions posts to start rolling out! Thanks for reading, and i’ll see you all in the next post!

  1. I have been watching Satsuriku no Tenshi, and it started off pretty goed only to have episode 2 turn it into something that I did not really enjoy. With episode 3 coming out today, I will decide after seeing that one if I am going to continue with it or not. I have also watched Hanebado ! I really don’t like sportsanimes, but this one is a sportsanime without really focussing on the sport. So far it’s been pretty good and I really recommend it 😊

  2. Historical simulcast shows have been winning me over ever since Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu. Angolmois is set to continue that trend…aside from that filter that puts streaks all over the rest of the animation, that is. Hanebado is also doing well for a show of its genre, since I don’t watch a lot of sports anime.

Since you say you’re an SoL person, then you could probably try Chio’s School Road, Asobi Asobase and Kyoto Teramachi Sanjou no Holmes, although that last one is more tentative a recommendation than the others since it’s got more of a focus on mystery, rather than intentionally having an SoL mood. The first two are comedies that didn’t really work for me, but maybe they’ll do something for you.
