Step aside, MMO Junkie. There’s a new kid on the block, and they are not messing around. Wotakoi tells the story of Narumi, a young woman who has just quit her old job, moving to a new company due to discrimination from her peers because of her otaku interests. When she gets to her new company, though, she meets her childhood friend and fellow otaku, Hirotaka, and with that meeting, the flames of love begin to slowly kindle…

Ok, maybe that was a bit of an overdramatic summary of the story so far, but it’s not far off. There are several things that I really enjoyed about this show. The depiction of Otaku is really well done; they aren’t NEETS or shut-ins from society, they are real people with real jobs, trying to keep their hobbies on the side. As someone who does extensive Anime Blogging and watching while juggling a full-time job, their situation feels a bit too familiar for me.
It’s sometimes hard being an otaku, especially in places or societies where those interests are pretty heavily looked down upon. Narumi has just had an experience with her boyfriend leaving her because of her otaku interests, and is determined to not let that happen again. Hirotaka, on the other hand, has a different plan in mind…

I really think this could shape up to be one of the most interesting Romance series of the year, if done correctly. The characters are fun and have lots of potential, the visuals are pretty nice, and the references are just freaking glorious. As someone who enjoyed MMO Junkie last year, but thought it was kind of lacking in some areas, i’m hoping that Wotakoi will be able to step up to the plate, and deliver.
This is my favorite for romance so far this season. I laughed so much in episode 2. It is pretty great so I hope it keeps it up!

You’re very right, it’s hilarious! Comedy geared towards the otaku fanbase, too 😂

I love this show. I’m also watching Tadakoi but Wotakoi is so much better. ^^
