Urahara was one of the shows I was most looking forward to this Fall 2017 Season. From the announcements, trailers, etc. it looked like an interesting Magical Girl-type show with a unique art style, so you can imagine how stoked I was when I learned about it. Unfortunately, the first episode was… incredibly underwhelming, to be honest. It wasn’t all bad, but it certainly wasn’t anywhere near what I was expecting.
Let’s get the good points out of the way first. The art style is super unique, the world is gorgeous, and the characters are very interesting to look at. The characters themselves are pretty standard fare for a show like this, but the story itself is pretty shallow. It feels like a strange blend of a lot of talent and a lot of good ideas, but was turned into a kid’s show; the whole thing feels extraordinarily childish.
I really, really wanted to like this show, but if the first episode was any indication, I think it may end up being a big flop. I’ll try to stick it out for a few episodes, but i’m sadly not terribly hopeful. As much as i’d love this show to succeed, it might just not be possible to come back at this point.
