Oooh goody gumdrops, here we are at Day 9 with Favorite Anime Villain. This is a great one, because there are so many Anime villains out there, but just think how many of them have actually been more than just subpar. Time and time again, I see such mediocre villains popping up in Anime. Seriously, a villain is such an important part of a story, they really can’t afford to be half-baked or the story itself falls apart and loses meaning.
My favorite anime villain is probably Kuze, from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Not only is Ghost in the Shell one of my favorite franchises, Kuze himself perfectly personifies one of the greatest aspects of the series itself. The fact that, when everyone is connected to a network, and switching bodies is easy beans, can a person stay the same as they always were? Kuze puts together all the things that make Ghost in the Shell brilliant in one awesome package.
With a genuinely interesting background, and ideals that aren’t really evil, Kuze is really only a villain in the fact that he is working against the goals of Section 9; he is, for all intents and purposes, a terrorist. Kuze’s personal history, along with his connection to the Major, his brilliant planning and his own adeptness at a wide variety of things, make him an extremely interesting character. And while we can’t necessarily condone his actions as truly being good, we also can’t help but sympathize with him, either.
Honorable mentions for Makishima from Psycho-Pass must be awarded, as he is a great example of the truly evil villain type. It was honestly a tough choice, but I liked Kuze a bit better. What do you guys think? Who is your favorite anime villain? Please let me know, and I hope to see you all again tomorrow, too.
