Spring 2017 was a fantastic season, with some truly great shows, and a surprising lack of extremely bad ones. And looking at the currently released lineup of shows for the Summer 2017 season, i’m feeling pretty hopeful as well! Let’s just all hope that we can keep up the momentum and get another great season! That being said, i’m going to let you guys know what i’m looking forward to this upcoming season!
Fate/Apocrypha. Heck yeah, we’re finally getting Apocrypha. Not to mention, getting more Fate, which is always a good thing. I mean, who doesn’t love Type-Moon? Yeah, sure, some of the things in the Fate franchise have been a bit subpar, but as a general rule, I love it to bits. Let’s hope that we get a show as good as or better than the latest TV adaptation of Unlimited Blade Works.
Owarimonogatari 2. If you read my blog, you know how much I love the Monogatari franchise. I’ve been trying very hard to power through the franchise, to get ready for this new season release. If it’s anywhere as good as the rest of Monogatari, you can be sure that it’ll be a great show to watch.
New Game!! I loved the original New Game, so i’m very glad we’re getting more. Because sometimes all you need in your life is some moe girls making video games. It’s not really the workplace informational show you’ll get from Shirobako, but it’s fun nonetheless. Speaking of which, more Shirobako would be nice…
Koi to Uso Looks like it might be an interesting Romance show. It’s got an interesting setting and what looks to be some very nice art as well. Whether they make something great, or if it turns out to be just a fanservicey rom-com is yet to be seen, but as of right now, I’m feeling hopeful.
In Another World With My Smartphone. I’ve actually been following the Light Novels for this one, and it’s pretty good. Not amazing, but pretty good. As might be expected, though, it falls into a lot of Light-Novel-Anime tropes, i.e. character gets put into a fantasy world with really OP powers and makes himself a harem. But it should be a rather fun watch anyway, so i’m looking forward to it.
Isekai Shokudou. A mysterious cafe that serves people on weekdays and extradimensional beings on weekends? Sign me up! I think this could either end up being a really interesting show with a lot of deep plot narrative and character development, or a show like Wagnaria, which I still enjoyed, but takes a more comedic approach to the whole thing.
Senki Zesshou Symphogear AXZ. It’s Symphogear. It’s like… Cyberpunk magical girls who power up by singing as they fight. What’s not to love here? Symphogear’s been pretty good in the past, so i’ve got high hopes for this one as well. We’ll see how it does.
The Reflection looks like a pretty interesting take on the Superhero Genre. It’s up against My Hero Academia this season as well, so it’s gotta be good to overcome that hype. From what i’ve seen of it, it looks relatively promising, so i’ll give it a shot.
That’s pretty much it for what i’m looking forward to. This season we’ve got a rather strange lineup of shows, and lots of them seem to be rather similar. We’ve got the fantasy world action series like Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu, Jikan no Shihaisha,Shoukoku no Altair… Then we’ve got the ‘strange’ sports section with stuff like Ballroom e Youkoso, DIVE!!, Keppeki Danshi, and more. There’s the twisted school-life/romcom genre, which has gotten immensely overloaded this season with stuff like Kakegurui, Tsurezure Children, Aho Girl, Centaur no Nayami… And to me it seems like a majority of shows will either be super fanservicey or just plain strange. But I might be wrong. I’ll give everything a fair try, though I only have so much time in my life to watch stuff.
Wow, looking at some of the movies we’ll be getting this season as well, I can’t help but be excited. There’s stuff i’ve been awaiting for a while, and stuff that’s come out of nowhere and surprised me! Here’s what i’m looking forward to.
No Game No Life: Zero. While No Game No Life first strikes a viewer as just another light-novel-anime, it really has some very clever philosophy written into it. And the LN’s are extremely dense and well-written. Scheduled for release on July 15th, I really hope this movie lives up to my love for the series.
Uchiage Hanabi, Shita ka Miru ka? It’s a story about three friends on a quest to answer a mundane question: do fireworks look flat from the side? It sounds silly, but sometimes the most mundane questions are the ones that create the most exciting adventures. look forward to this movie around August 8th.
Kimi no Koe wo Todoketai. A girl living in a seaside town follows the words of her deceased grandmother, her legends about spirits, and through her searching, has an encounter she will never forget. The premise of this show gives me a vibe kind of like My Neighbor Totoro, so i’m really looking forward to this one. It’s supposed to release on August 25th, so keep your eyes peeled.
Sound! Euphonium Movie. Eupho is a great series. I respect the art style, the music, and the characters that were built in it. I’m very excited for a continuation of this story, and apparently we can expect it sometime around September 30th.
That’s it for the movies that i’m looking forward to. Overall, I think Summer 2017 has the potential to be a really great season, so long as the shows stick to their guns and don’t fizzle out or give up halfway through.
That being said, what are YOU guys looking forward to this season? I’ve created a poll with a selection of shows from this season, but if you don’t see the show you were looking forward to, leave me a comment letting me know!
